God’s Tools

“If you can use anything, Lord, you can use me,” sings the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. God still uses foolish tools in the hands of weak people to build his kingdom.

David’s weaponry was ridiculous: a sling and five stones. It didn’t matter. That is the picture of what God wants for us today: running toward the fray!

1 Sam 17:48 (NIV)
As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.

Samson was a strong man, but he slaughtered a thousand Philistines with a fresh donkey’s jawbone. Ridiculous weaponry, indeed.

Judges 15:14-15 (NKJV)
14 Then the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him; and the ropes that were on his arms became like flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds broke loose from his hands. 15 He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and killed a thousand men with it.

Joshua and the Battle of Jericho: marching and blowing horns. Jars, Torches, and Trumpets: Gideon’s army used these everyday items to create confusion and panic among the Midianite forces, leading to victory. A farming tool and a tent peg…

Ecclesiastes 9:18
Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.

Judges 3:31 (NIV)
After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.

Judges 4:21
Then Jael, Heber’s wife, took a tent peg and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, and it went down into the ground; for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.

Zechariah 10:4
From him comes the cornerstone, From him the tent peg, From him the battle bow, From him every ruler together.

Hebrews 11:32-34 (NIV)
32 I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength.
